Soon after the Morgan Ranch introduced its first Wagyu herd in 1992, Dan participated in a Food and Wine Magazine event in Aspen, Colorado. Arriving on opening night to the first of what would, over the next many years become dozens of such events, he found himself needing to calm his nerves and so settled into a chair at the bar of the Little Nell.
After half an hour sipping his scotch alone, another couple entered and leaned up against the bar, ordering a round themselves. Some back and forth pleasantries, and another round of drinks later, the trio found a shared passion, food.
The next day Dan held a private tasting for his bar mates, Carlos and Debbie Nieto, and two weeks later delivered his first shipment of Wagyu beef to their Highland Park, Illinois restaurant, Carlos’.
For almost 20 years since that first chance encounter, Carlos and Debbie have opened two more restaurants in the Greater Chicago area and continued serving Morgan Ranch Beef at each establishment. And for his part, Dan got an invitation to their son’s wedding…and of course, the beef served was his gift.
